Rich was a truck driver with a company for 18 years, when they closed for vacation in 1996, they never re-opened their doors. Rich, then 58 years old could not find a job. Age discrimination, what a joke, it exists very heavily. We had enough in savings so Rich retired. Gay worked for a mortgage company for over 12 years, the company moved out of state, so she was out of a job. Gay went to school for 3 months and learned to operate a computer . She then found a great job with great bosses. They had a parrot for 23 years, four cats and two horses but always kept them at some one else's farm, where they had to operate on their time schedules or they wouldn't get to see them. "We both always loved animals. We decided to buy a two acre home where we could keep the horses with us." That was the start. Shortly after purchasing our little ranch, someone had given our 9 month old granddaughter 2 baby chicks for Easter. Our son called us asking if we would take them since he couldn't keep them. Rich built a coop and shelter for them. We bought a female pigmy goat and her castrated son to have here as pets, two pot belly pigs for pets and our Siberian Husky dogs for breeding and companionship. We didn't like the idea of riding the horses in the woods, so much can happen to the horses. They can turn their ankles in holes dug by small animals, get their legs scraped by riding thru underbrush, and you can get hurt too. So when the four acres that were fenced and cleared of woods became available we purchased it so we could ride the horses there. And from there our farm and cause has grown! We now have over 700 animals, and it just keeps on growing! |
We
are always looking for donations to keep the farm in shape. We are in need
of fencing, wood to build pens, all the hardware (hinges, hasps, mesh wires..
etc) as well as funds to help us feed and medicate the animals.
We also need volunteers to help us to feed the animals, and to help clean up after all the animals on a daily basis. If
you can help us either with your time or a donation, The
Double "D" Bar Ranch or email us at: |
